"If You Want Me"
from the CD "M&R Rush"
If You Want Me was inspired by a former girlfriend of Carl's who tried to warn him when she told him, "If you want me, don't ever hurt me or I will slip away". Carl thought this was such a powerful statement that he used it as the chorus when he wrote this song.
In the 1980's, rock music was driven by new sounds coming from new synthesizers, so Carl added a PROPHET 5 Sequential Circuits synthesizer to his collection of keyboards, and it is that synthesizer that is featured on If You Want Me.
M&R Rush also wanted to add a saxophone to this one, so they asked Barry Sperti to come to Star Trax recording studio and jam along with the band. Barry's sax comes smokin' out of the box as he lays down some hot saxophone solos that light the fire in this song.
John had the idea to add a clean guitar part, similar to Mike and The Mechanic’s song, All I Need Is A Miracle and it worked great!
Jeff does a great job singing lead vocals while John adds his horn, as the band lovingly calls it, to the high harmonies. Roger and Carl join in on the powerful harmonies in the chorus and Marty delivers some amazing high-hat work throughout the song.
Thanks again to Barry Sperti for joining in on the fun of this one!
LYRICS
I want to know what she’s doin - with who she doin
Everything we used to do at night
I want to know where she’s goin - with who she’s goin
And if everything is going all right
Oh Ho Ho I thought I knew her so well
But now I know that I was wrong
I should of believed her (should of believed)
She tried to warn me when she told me
Chorus
If you (if you really want me)
Want me -Don’t ever (No don’t hurt me)
Hurt Me or I will (Oh you know I’m gonna slip away
I want to know what she’s thinking-of who she’s thinking
And if she ever still thinks about me
I want to know what she’s feeling and if she’s feeling
The same way that it used to be
Oh Ho Ho I thought I knew her so well
But now I know that I was wrong
I should of believed her (should of believed)
She tried to warn me when she told me
